What is a CMS?

::A CMS (Content Management System) is a website solution that allows a client to maintain their own website after installation by the web developer. Traditional “static” web sites require the regular editing of files and the uploading of those files to the web server. This is laborious and requires a level of technical knowledge (logging on to the server using an FTP program, manually uploading files and images etc.)

A CMS does away with all these limitations! By using a simple administration system, accessed using your favourite web browser, you the client can maintain a dynamic, regularly updated site. Traditionally, CMS systems were complicated and expensive (some commercial CMS systems can cost tens of thousands of pounds). With the advent of open source CMS systems, the power of these web site solutions is available to everyone.

A CMS is suitable for a wide range of web sites, for example:

  • Corporate websites or portals
  • Online commerce
  • Small business websites
  • Non-profit and organisational websites
  • Government applications
  • Corporate intranets and extranets
  • School and church websites
  • Personal or family homepages
  • Community-based portals
  • Magazines and newspapers

  • Group-based permission system
  • Intelligent caching mechanism to only get what is necessary from the database
  • Full template support, for unlimted looks without changing a line of content
  • Minimal system requirements
  • Admin panel with multiple language support

The core functionality of the system can be augmented by installable “modules” that can be added as the need arises. Some of the available modules include:

  • Guestbook
  • Album
  • Calendar
  • Feedback Form
  • Product catalogue

After installing, customising and testing your CMS installation, we will provide you with a day's training to help you get up and running and fully conversant in the use of the system.
